Ulmenstein Basalt Lake

Highlight • Lake

Walk here on the old Kleinbahntrassenweg. Otherwise, the Ulmenstein speaks for itself: lake, picnicking, hiking.

Ulmenstein Basalt Lake

Highlight • Lake

A paradise for those seeking peace and quiet, nature lovers and mountain lake lovers. The basalt lake "Ulmenstein" is located between Hofaschenbach and Mackenzell and is up to 15 meters deep. You can circle the lake on hiking trails. On the south side there is a barbecue area with seating, fireplace, barbecue hut, shelter and you have a beautiful view of the lake. A shelter for hikers and cyclists was built on the north side.
In recent years, the Mackenzeller Wind Choir "Tonica" has given many concerts here on the Ulmenstein.
At the site of today's lake, a 70 meter high basalt dome protruded until 1908, which was gradually dismantled and transported on rails via Mackenzell to Nüst and then found its way to Holland. Up to 270 miners were employed here at the time. After the 70 meters above the ground had been removed, the miners went to work up to 30 meters below the ground to bring basalt columns to the surface.
Around 1928 water broke in and further mining was no longer possible or no longer profitable. Over the decades, today's basalt lake developed in the depths of the quarry due to springs and fissure water.
