The beginnings of Hilpoltstein Castle and the town date back to the 10th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries the castle was the seat of the Lords of Stein. In 1354 Hilpoltstein was granted city rights. Two years later, Schweiger von Gundelfingen sold the castle and town of Hilpoltstein to the Wittelsbach dukes Stephan, Johann and Friedrich. When the duchy was divided, Hilpoltstein became part of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. In 1392 Duke Stephan confirmed the city rights.
