Marktredwitz station

Highlight • Rest Area

The two main lines Nuremberg–Cheb and Weiden–Hof intersect at Marktredwitz station. This makes it an important railway junction in northern Bavaria. From the central bus station on Bahnhofplatz, regular buses connect Marktredwitz with the surrounding area. The station was opened on May 15, 1878 by the Royal Bavarian Transport Authority together with the Schnabelwaid–Holenbrunn railway line as a through station. It was expanded to a junction station with the opening of the branch to Schirnding on November 20, 1879 (later extended to Cheb) and the connection to Wiesau on June 1, 1882. Before the Second World War, Marktredwitz was an important railway junction for the whole of Europe. The Rome – Munich – Berlin – Stockholm and Paris – Nuremberg – Prague lines intersected here. Over a hundred trains left the station every day in all four directions.

Historic Town Hall, Marktredwitz

Highlight • Historical Site

The historic town hall was built after the town was granted market rights in 1384 by rebuilding and using two towers from the former castle complex. It took on its current form with its distinctive bay window during the rebuilding in 1591/92. At that time, the bread and meat counters were set up on the ground floor and the upper floor was designed as a large dance hall. The town council still meets in the hall, which has now been furnished in a very modern style. The building now houses the tourist information office and public toilets on the ground floor.

St. Theresia Church in Marktredwitz

Highlight • Religious Site

In the 17th century, the Protestant town of Marktredwitz was under Bohemian - and thus Catholic - administration and was the site of an Austrian garrison. Empress Maria Theresa donated a church for her soldiers, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1776. The Roman Catholic church was consecrated on October 15, 1777. In 1785, St. Theresa's Church was elevated to the parish church of the garrison and the Catholic civilian population. The patron saint of the church is Teresa of Avila. A picture of the saint can be seen on the altarpiece.

Troglauermühle

Highlight • Historical Site

The mill on the Kösseine and the miller named Troglauer were first mentioned in documents in 1541. Hans Troglauer passed the mill on to his sons Hermann and Georg. Georg is believed to have shot the Burger miller on the opposite bank of the Kösseine from a window in 1620 because he had dug up the Lohbach water for him. The "murder stone" embedded in the ground of Zipprothplatz still commemorates this crime. As a result of the trial, the mill had to be sold. It came into the hands of the Jahn family in 1639 and the Rieß family in 1734, who ran it until 1986 and still own it today.

The 50th degree of latitude running across the bridge is displayed on the railing with a bronze plaque. The stele next to the bridge is intended as a reminder that the bridge formed the border between the Egerian and margravial areas for centuries.

Gerberhaus Marktredwitz

Highlight • Historical Site

The house with the large drying floors in the roof was built around 1780 by the Dörflas master tanner Arzberger. On the ground floor there were milk pits and the meat counters of the Dörflas butchers. Since 1985 the house has belonged to the town of Marktredwitz, from 1986 to 1992 it was completely renovated and then given to the Marktredwitz local group of the Fichtelgebirge Association for use as a clubhouse.

Zipprothplatz

Highlight • Monument

This square was named after Karl Zipproth, mayor and honorary citizen of the municipality of Dörflas, which was an independent community until 1939. In house number 5, he was the last textile manufacturer to run a publishing business. At the end of the 1980s, the square was redesigned after two houses were demolished. The east row was built after the fire of 1843. The houses on the west side were rebuilt in the first third of the 20th century. In the southeast is the former Dörflas castle and later guesthouse, and in the northeast is the tanner's house.
