Highlight • Cafe

Nice cafe in an unexpected place. Very close to the Erewash Valley Trail so suitable for a lunch stop. Great selection of sandwiches, salads, etc. and the shop also has a deli and cake selection (eat in or take away). Very friendly. Nice small garden for the right weather.
Bike parking in the garden - a couple of places are reserved for Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish.

Canal basin at the junction of the Nottingham, Erewash and Cromford canals. Only the Erewash canal remains in water so now the northerly end of the Erewash canal. Great starting point for cycle rides or walks along the routes of the Nottingham and Erewash canals (Erewash Valley trail - more details at broxtowe.gov.uk/for-you/parks-and-nature-conservation/nature-conservation/erewash-valley-trail

Bennerley Viaduct is currently only accessed from the west end (the canal side) with construction work to build a new access ramp at the east end. There's no way to cross the viaduct until this work is done, with no apparent completion date. To cross the river and canal you need to detour slightly to the north along some small but rideable gravel tracks. It's doable on 28mm tyres.

Bennerley Viaduct viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

Great viewing point of the Bennerley viaduct situated on the side of the Nottingham canal. The viaduct once carried the Great Northern railway between Nottingham Victoria and Derby Friar Gate. Now one of only 2 wrought iron viaducts in England with long term plans to restore the structure and to link it into the cycle network. Whilst no official access to the viaduct, many people climb the embankments at each end and walk across the structure. Not possible to take a bike across (unless you carry it the whole way). The restoration plans have stalled due to lack of funds. More information at friendsofbennerleyviaduct.wordpress.com

Wouldn't recommend trying to cross. Looks bumpy 😳and unsafe. Sure there should be a locked gate, but missing.

View of Bennerley Viaduct

Highlight • Historical Site

This giant iron bridge in the Erewash Valley is a spectacular remnant of the bygone age of steam and coal. It is the longest wrought iron Victorian viaduct in the country, and it is still an impressive structure even in the modern era. Originally built in 1878, it was given a new lease of life in 2022 after it was open to hiking and cycling traffic. From this viewing point, you can see it in all its glory.

First running injury of 2023… I tripped on a flagstone or buried branch or something on the way down to the canal. Thankfully no major damage, but my legs and wrist will be sore for a while. Lovely run in spite of the damage!
13km of running through thunder, lightning and torrential rain… I’ve never been so wet! I arrived back at the car with my clothes stuck to me so much I looked like a sausage. My shoes were soaked from splashing through puddles, my socks were drenched where a few puddles proved deeper than my shoes, and I had muddy legs up …
