Lanchester Valley Path

Highlight • Trail

Stretching for 20 miles (32 km) through the countryside, Lanchester Valley Path is perfect for cycling and hiking. The path follows the old Lanchester Valley railway line which ran from 1862 until 1965. Trains once carried iron to Consett steelworks and coal from Langley Park along this route.

You should be able to spot old station houses, platforms and historical ruins en route. There's also plenty of benches and picnic areas.

Lanchester Valley Way

Highlight • Trail

A great route but can be busy with dog walkers throughout, so be aware.
Lanchester and Knitsley farm provide opportunities to take in refreshments, likewise, when you get there Parkhead Station also offers similar.
If you have arrived at Parkhead Station from Lanchester, then the good news is that it's mostly downhill back to Lanchester, which is a real bonus, especially if the wind is against you on the Waskerly Way. Enjoy........👍

Hownsgill Viaduct

Highlight • Cycleway

A former railway bridge, the Hownsgill was constructed by Stanhope and Tyne Railway from 1832 to 1834. Designed by engineer Robert Stephenson, the bridge is 690 feet (210 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) high with twelve pillars. The viaduct was closed to passenger service in 1955, before being fully closed in the 1980s, when the tracks were lifted.

Today, the viaduct is managed by Sustrans and part of the C2C cycle route.

Waskerley Way

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Waskerley Way is a 9.7 mile (15.6 km) traffic-free cycle path. Running through County Durham's finest countryside, it passes impressive railway structures, patchwork farmland, woodland, wetland, scrub and moorland. The route runs from Stanhope to Lydgetts Junction. As the route is very popular with cyclists, hikers and horse riders, it may be quite crowded, especially in summer. Look out for slow worms and butterflies along the way!

Weardale–Teesdale Pass (B6278)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

This is a long moorland road that links Stanhope in Weardale to Eggleston in Teesdale. It's about 17km and reaches a high point of 511m on Middleton Common. It's quite a hilly road with the steepest section coming out of Stanhope if traveling from north to south.
