Dammgraben Altenau

Highlight • Trail

The dam ditch is the longest man-made ditch in the Upper Harz. Its purpose was to divert surface water for the operation of the Upper Harz coal and steel industry from distant areas with high levels of precipitation (in particular from the Bruchberg massif and parts of the Brocken massif). It was laid out from 1732 and extended further and further east until 1827. Its original total length was about 25 km; This could be successively shortened to about 19 km through the construction of underground sections, so-called watercourses, in the years 1820 to 1861. It gets its name from the Sperberhaier Dam, which bridges a depression in the terrain.

Iron Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

Nice rusty brown water flows out of the iron source from a pipe and after a few meters the soup runs into the clear water of the dam. Somehow bizarre this source, inevitably you stop and wonder!
Not far from the source of iron is a refurbished refuge, where sun worshipers should sit outside under the wooden board in the morning when the weather is good ;-)

Huttaler Widerwaage

Highlight • Monument

The Huttaler weighbridge was built in the years 1763 to 1776 as part of the Upper Harz water shelf. The building is able to supply water from the Huttal to the Hirschler pond at low tide by appropriate switching and to relieve it from water at high tide.
