Description
If you're looking for a gravel biking route that truly earns its 'moderate' rating, the Mazama loop from Flagg Mountain delivers a challenging 19.3-mile (31.1 km) ride with 1083 feet (330 metres) of climbing, typically taking around 2 hours and 28 minutes. This route is best suited for experienced riders seeking panoramic views and varied terrain in the Wenatchee National Forest.
What to expect on Mazama loop from Flagg Mountain
The ride starts on Forest Service Road 5225, a generally well-maintained dirt and gravel path, though you might encounter some heavily washboarded sections at lower elevations. As you branch onto the Flagg Mountain Loop, the terrain shifts dramatically, becoming more technical with tighter turns, uneven surfaces, and steeper inclines often covered in loose rock. You'll pedal through a mix of pine forest and open ridgelines, with the reward being sweeping, panoramic viewpoints from Flagg Mountain itself, offering extensive vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. This challenging section means the route is definitely better suited for experienced gravel bikers ready for a workout.
Planning your visit
Access to the trail is via Forest Service Road 5225. While the initial part of this road is generally easy for off-road driving, be prepared for washboarded sections. The Flagg Mountain Loop itself is more challenging, so ensure your bike and skills are up to the task. The area is part of the Wenatchee National Forest, offering opportunities for dispersed camping along both FSR 5225 and the Flagg Mountain Loop, with numerous clearings available for setting up camp.
