Zion Trailhead loop from Quilcene National Fish Hatchery is definitely worth your time. What to expect on Sleepy Hollow Trailhead – Mt. Zion Trailhead loop from Quilcene National Fish Hatchery
Expect a journey through varied landscapes, from the conifer forests leading to Gold Creek on the Sleepy Hollow portion to the dramatic ascent of Mt. Zion. The Mt. Zion Trail itself rewards your efforts with panoramic vistas of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Cascades, and the Olympic Mountains from its rocky summit. While some sections are paved, be prepared for primitive roads, chipseal, loose gravel, rocks, and potholes, especially on the steep climbs where grades can hit 15-20%. You'll need a robust gravel bike with at least 30mm wide tires, as some technical sections might even require pushing your bike.
Planning your visit
Your adventure begins at the Quilcene National Fish Hatchery, a historic site where you can even see coho salmon. Be aware that the Mt. Zion/Sleepy Hollow Trailhead requires a valid Recreation Pass for day use. There are no services for much of the route, so plan to be self-sufficient, though a resupply point for food and water may be available in Quilcene around mile 40 of a similar loop.
