What to expect on View from Chatfield Dam – South Platte Reservoir loop from Littleton - Mineral
This route is a journey through constantly changing landscapes and surfaces, perfect for gravel bikes. You'll roll over chunky gravel, groomed crushed gravel, old asphalt, and even some dirt and singletrack sections. From the expansive views atop the Chatfield Dam, overlooking the vast Chatfield Reservoir and the Front Range foothills, to the wide, smooth dirt paths alongside the South Platte River in Waterton Canyon, the scenery keeps things interesting. Keep an eye out for wildlife, especially near smaller bodies of water like Eaglewatch, Redtail, and Blackrock lakes, and be prepared for some sections of sharp gravel, particularly on the dam itself.
Planning your visit
This loop is part of the larger Chatfield State Park system, so expect to pay park entrance fees or have a state park pass. While the route is generally moderate, some sections, like a small, steep, sandy hill connecting to the High Line Canal Trail, can be challenging. For optimal performance and to avoid punctures from goat's head weeds, at least 40mm wide tires are recommended, and tubeless tires with sealant are a wise choice. The area is popular, so consider an early start, especially on weekends, to enjoy the trails.
