What to expect on Boulder Creek – Chalks Road loop from Boulder Creek
Starting near an historic farm, the route quickly transitions to dirt and gravel roads, ascending towards a very scenic, white stone ridge. You'll encounter sections with exposed rocks, especially as you climb towards the ocean view summit, where the views across Big Basin Redwoods State Park are a well-earned reward. Be prepared for a physically demanding ride, including a sustained climb at approximately a 12% grade for about 1,000 feet of elevation gain, making this best suited for riders with strong fitness.
Planning your visit
This route is located within Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Dogs are permitted on Chalks Road, which is a multi-use trail. Recent reports indicate good conditions, but always check local park advisories, especially after rain, as the chalky composition can make the trail slippery when wet. Consider visiting during drier months to avoid slick conditions on the exposed chalky sections.
