If you're looking for a challenging and rewarding day on two wheels, the Frijole Hill – Pio Hill loop from Trinidad is one of the best gravel biking trails in the region. This difficult 38.6-mile (62.1 km) route packs in 2370 feet (722 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 4 hours and 34 minutes to complete. It's a classic Trinidad Colorado gravel biking experience, best suited for experienced riders with advanced bike handling skills.

What to expect on Frijole Hill – Pio Hill loop from Trinidad

This loop offers a true journey through the Southern Colorado plateau, where you'll often see more wildlife than vehicles. After a short paved section, you'll transition to gravel, including a significant climb up to a gun range. The descent down Frijole Hill is a fast, exhilarating experience that demands your full attention. As you ride, you'll be treated to expansive views of the Spanish Peaks, mesas, and Trinidad Lake, with the historic Trinidad sign visible high on a sandstone bluff.
