Half-timbered houses on the Estedeich in Hove

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

A dyke hike along the Este is a refreshment for the soul, especially - but not only - during the heyday. From the dike, one gets an impressive view over the orchards and the typical style of the Alte Land in the farmhouses.

Path on the Estedeich

Highlight • Trail

A wonderful hike can be enjoyed here on the Estedeich dike. It's advisable to bring your own food and drinks, as there aren't many places to stop for refreshments. You'll find fantastic views of apple orchards and old thatched-roof houses. Cycling isn't recommended here. A hike is highly recommended and very interesting 👍🏼.

St. Martini Church Estebrügge

Highlight • Religious Site

The nave of St. Martini could belong to any North German brick church, the tower is unique. Not only is it made entirely of wood, but the roof covered with 8000 shingles is twisted, and this little extravagance was not planned by the builders. The tower has only turned over the years by setting the building on the soft marshes.

The church is open during the summer months during the day and should also be worth seeing inside. As I usually travel with a dog, I did not even look at it myself.

Estebrügge Swing Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

A picturesque swing bridge in Estebrügge. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it in action. Luckily, I didn't have to wait. :-) The narrow bridge doesn't allow two-way traffic. It's lined with beautiful, old, colorful half-timbered houses.

September 3, 2023,48/23 Von Buxtehude nach Cranz: Este - Deiche - Obst
At the end of my summer vacation, today I went on a hike along familiar paths from Buxtehude to Estebogen in Cranz.

Today we didn't go through forests, but on dikes along the Este, with wonderful views of the ripening apple orchards.

The dykes along the Este from Buxtehude to Cranz invite you to go hiking at any time of the year and are not overcrowded.

We took the 2040 bus to the Buxtehude harbor bridge. The bus drove for about 40 minutes through the beautiful Alte Land. We then took the 150 bus back.
Buxtehude is also very easy to reach by train. This pretty little town is also worth a visit and there are many places to stop for a bite to eat. If …

This Sunday afternoon, in glorious autumn weather, I took a dike hike along the Este River from Buxtehude to Cranz (Estebogen).

Although I've taken this route several times before, I enjoy the views it offers each time: the old town of Buxtehude, the Este River, whose banks are partially overgrown, the view of the orchards of the Altes Land (Old …

Nice path, lots on the dyke, plenty of apples on the tree, and now and then walnuts in the leaves. Finally, stop at the Finkenwerder ferry terminal: apple pie and a pot of coffee

Today we took the train to Hamburg and then the bus to Cranz.
A tour that we wanted to do on a whim without going ahead.
The Alte Land is still in apple blossom and we wanted to enjoy that.

Today we took a small risk with the hiking group from the local history association. We chose a path that we hadn't walked ourselves before. But we knew that this day in early spring was just the right one.

On the dykes of the Este from Buxtehude to Cranz I have been on the road several times. This route is now one of my feel-good hikes.

The Este dykes were not overcrowded (until Estebrugge I was practically alone on the dike) - to my surprise, the Elbe dyke near Cranz was not particularly frequented this afternoon either.
