Highlight • Viewpoint

A currently quite small linden tree. In a few decades it will certainly be a splendidly solitary phenomenon.

Former Gatekeeper's House

Highlight • Historical Site

Railroad keeper's houses were usually built at level intersections of railways and roads or at block points, turnouts and branch points, so that the responsible railway staff, colloquially railroaders, could live directly next to their work. Other wardens' houses, for example on the Gotthard route, were built for railway guards or road patrolmen whose job it was to daily check the section of the route to the nearest railroad keeper's house and to carry out certain track maintenance work.

With the thickening railway operations, it became necessary to permanently staff important positions on the railroad side in order to carry out control and reporting tasks, to make manual controls, to operate mechanical barriers, signals and points. For this reason, Bahnwärterhäuser were built on the model of the Chausseehauses as a service apartment for the railroader, in rare cases also with service room. Already in the founding time of the railway z. For example, at the Bavarian Ostbahngesellschaft Bahnwärterhäuser (for married guards) and guardhouses (for unmarried guards) built. One of the tasks of the signalman was to close the barriers, to set the course in stations and to light lamps for lighting purposes and in signals and to extinguish them after dawn.

Today, barriers, signals and points are usually operated remotely from a signal box, so that the service at the Bahnwärterhaus is a thing of the past. In part, these homes have become single-family or weekend homes through sale in private hands.

A great way to end a tour when there is outdoor catering, e.g. after-work brooms. Be there on time, the places are occupied quickly. Dates at maier-weingut.de

Alte Schmiede Schwaikheim

Highlight • Historical Site

The old blacksmith's shop was built in 1933 by Karl Kraus and was operated by him and his brother as a blacksmith's shop and wagon shop until 1984.

For 50 years, horses, oxen and cows were shod there, iron wagon tires were mounted on wooden wheels and all iron parts for the carts were made. Tools such as field hews, picks, spades, shovels and scythes were also prepared in the forge and even nails were forged themselves.

When blacksmith work was no longer in great demand and the small Schwaikheim village blacksmith's shop could not find a successor, the community acquired the property in 1988 and left the forge to the Schwaikheim local association in order to preserve the forge for posterity. In 1992, the “Old Smithy” was repaired and made functional by members of the local history association based on old drawings.
The museum forge offers visitors an insight into the ancient technology of iron working using fire, hammers and anvils.

From Schwaikheim train station we went past the former signalman's house to Zillhardshof. There is the Hofcafe Hag there. We continued across fields back towards Schwaikheim. The church, a very large old beech tree and the old forge are worth seeing.
