What to expect on Kinney Shores Beach loop from Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
This jogging route takes you on a journey from the expansive white sands of Kinney Shores Beach into the tranquil, natural surfaces of the Atlantic Way Trail within the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. You'll start with the invigorating challenge of jogging on soft sand, enjoying classic coastal Maine views and the vast Atlantic Ocean. As you transition to the Atlantic Way Trail, the terrain shifts to a generally wide, flat dirt path winding through young pine and birch forests, eventually opening up to scenic views of Goosefare Brook marsh. Keep an eye out for ducks, herons, and even deer. While the beach section can be challenging due to soft sand, the refuge trails offer an easier, flatter surface, making this a well-rounded workout suitable for those who appreciate diverse landscapes.
Planning your visit
To make the most of your jog, plan your visit around low tide for more expansive sandy areas on Kinney Shores Beach. The Atlantic Way Trail is open from dawn until dusk, and dogs are permitted on leash within the refuge. On Kinney Shores Beach, dogs are allowed on leash from April 1st to September 30th, and off-leash with voice control from October 1st to March 31st. Be aware that rip currents can occur on the beach, and one section of the Atlantic Way Trail can be muddy, so appropriate footwear is advised.
