Highlight • Religious Site

The papal basilica Marienweiher is a wonderful place of rest and contemplation. The baroque interior is well worth seeing.

Marienweiher Pilgrimage Church

Highlight • Religious Site

In a document from 1189, Bishop Otto II (1177-1196) presented the Cistercian monastery in Langheim with its own church in Marienweiher. The donation was renewed in 1217.
A monastery and a hospice were built near the church. During the turmoil of the Hussite invasions (1419-1436), the church buildings in Marienweiher were plundered and destroyed. Marienweiher also felt the effects of the Thirty Years' War since the first Swedish invasion on June 6th, 1631. Looting and destruction took place until 1647 by troops from both denominations. The 18th century was a period of lively building activity for Marienweiher, culminating in the new construction of the baroque nave after 1718/19 and the tower (1743-1745); In 1777 a second expansion of the monastery took place. With the secularization (1802) came the civil occupation and dissolution of the monastery.

From Einöd via the slag mill to the parking lot, it runs smoothly. However, there is a lot going on when the weather is nice. Mutual respect is required.

The Stone Bridge from 1711 over the Schorgast, also called "Wernersbruck", is a technical monument and a masterly craftsmanship with a high rarity value.
For centuries, heavy horse-drawn wagons of copper ore and stones rolled over the bridge, defying for centuries all the water, ice drifts and even heavy tanks at the end of the Second World War.

Schorgast Valley Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This wonderful section leads from Marktschorgast (Goldbergsee) to Wirsberg,
(begins or ends near the star chef Herrmann's Romantik Posthotel, if you are hungry),
The forest is well-known and very popular, a lot of walkers and hikers but also cyclists are here during the season (holidays), the cyclists / or bikers can then drive a little more slowly and considerately and can enjoy this beautiful valley.
The sun's rays graze the treetops and come only discreetly onto the forest path along the Schorgast; this results in wonderful clear and fresh air. The stream meanders close to the edge of the path and then it stretches again on a small meadow with a clearing, a bridge leads over the Schorgast and a bench invites you to take a break, next to it there is a signpost with maps and information on sights.
Through Wirsberg and then on the butterfly path towards Himmelkron completes the beautiful route...
