View of the Feindliche Brüder Castles and Bad Salzig

Highlight • Viewpoint

The "Enemy Brothers" is a German legend about the neighboring castles Sterrenberg and Liebenstein, which you see from here on the other side of the valley. The story about the two brothers Heinrich and Konrad is said to have been first told in 1587. Both fell in love with the beautiful Hildegard. That this does not end with a happy ending, is somehow foreseeable ... If you want to read more: The legend is the subject of the poem "Two brothers" by Heinrich Heine in the book of songs.

Nice view of the Rhine and Bad Salzig.
Since the Rhine is 250 meters wide here, it was previously used as a roadstead for the transport ships, which since the 17th century could only pass through the upstream "Binger Loch" with pilots.
In 1893–94 the Binger Loch was widened to 30 meters and in 1966–74 it was expanded to its current 120 meters. With additional tail units, pilots are no longer required since the 1990s.

Yes, they are really great trails with great views, but in some places you need to be sure-footed and not afraid of heights.

From the ledge "praying nun" you have a fantastic view of the Rhine Valley. At the large wooden sculpture in the form of a praying nun, you realize that you are right. Find out more about the history of this place on a billboard.

What you learn by hiking so everything. In the past I only knew the Niederwald near Rüdesheim (Niederwalddenkmal / Germania) and considered this a proper name. Only through recurring names elsewhere and by signs I learned that a coppice is a forest in which felled beech and oak trees from the tree stumps again and again and thus form rather bushy, low deciduous forests.

On the plateau you walk along a relatively flat path past blooming orchards and flower meadows. Down in the valley you can see the Rhine flowing along. On the plateau you hike on a foothill of the Hunsrück, on the other side of the Rhine you see the first peaks of the Taunus.

Gorse piece, a look back into the past

The non-forested area on the plateau terrace between the narrow valley of the Rhine and the Weilerbach is officially designated as Niederwald, but is popularly known as the gorse piece. This area is of particular importance, since in pre-Roman times it was a settlement or a high fortress of the Trever Celts. The settlement of this area took place in the Iron Age almost 3000 years ago. The steeply sloping rock faces towards the Rhine and the hamlet stream represent a natural and insurmountable barrier. To the west, the high fortress was secured by a 10 m high wall. The protection provided by the wall was further strengthened by a trench in front of it. The Celtic hilltop settlement was founded by the Boppard doctor Dr. Friedrich Funk discovered and declared a monument zone by the district administration. In the Rhein-Zeitung of 04.05.2001 it says: “Because of its excellent preservation and the uniqueness of the overall construction, the preservationists believe that the complex is an important example of Iron Age hilltop castles for the Rhein-Hunsrück district - serves to preserve the archaeological substances, the preservation of which is in the public interest for scientific reasons.
