Salterns Way Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Stretching from the city of Chichester to the seafront at East Head, the Salterns Way is on quiet country lanes and cycle paths. To ride it in full is a flat 12 mile trip and the beach is completely worth the ride, the best in the area.

Centurion Way

Highlight • Trail

This cycle and walking route follows the line of the old Chichester to Midhurst Railway line as far as West Dean. There are plans to extend it further, to link up with the South Downs Way.

Chichester Cathedral

Highlight • Monument

Formerly known as the Church of the Holy Trinity, Chichester Cathedral has a Norman and Gothic style of architecture and was founded in 1075. The iconic spire can be seen for many miles across West Sussex and is the only medieval English cathedral that is visible from the sea.

Open to visitors all year round from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 12pm to 2pm on Sundays. There is no entrance free but donations are encouraged. Cycle parking in the High Street a short walk away.

Chichester Market Cross

Highlight • Monument

In the case of a "market cross," such as the one we encounter once again in the center of Chichester, one would have to ask the fundamental question of whether it is actually primarily a small sacred monument—as its cross shape suggests—or whether it is more of a secular object. In times long past, such a cross—unlike the classic wayside crosses or field crosses—was only allowed to be erected on site if the locality in question also possessed so-called "market rights"—that is, if it had been granted a corresponding privilege by the local ruler.

Chichester Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Chichester has quite a compact city centre focused around the ornate market cross and cathedral. Most of it is pedestrianised so be prepared to dismount.
