Wooden Bridge at Wellemeersen

Highlight • Bridge

This beautiful bridge, located in Welle, East Flanders, is unique in the Belgian railway landscape. With a length of 250 meters, it is an impressive piece of craftsmanship.
The entire bridge is made of tropical hardwood (tropical azobe hardwood), which combines durability and natural beauty.
The bridge is a gateway to the nearby De Wellemeersen nature reserve, which covers a vast area of 65 hectares.
Originally there was a steel and concrete bridge, but thanks to smart design, this wooden bridge fits perfectly into the environment.
The bridge connects to the Welle and Kappelmeersenpad, a provincial walking route of 11 km through the beautiful flood area of the Dender.
The African wood requires no additional treatment and should theoretically last a hundred years.
Infrabel invested approximately 950,000 euros in this bridge, 20% of which was financed by the European Union.

See the comment by @Ivince: In the meantime, the cycle path along the Dender has been completely extended.
Nevertheless, the Gerstjens remains a beautiful nature reserve.

Less known, but much more beautiful than along the Affligemdreef

Affligemdreef

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Affligemdreef is straight as an arrow and fortunately has a separate cycle path, because cars have a harder time passing each other here.

Gasthof De Brouwerij in Affligem is a cozy place known for its hospitality and good cuisine. It offers a menu of Belgian and European dishes, and is a popular choice for both lunch and dinner. Guests can enjoy a variety of meals, including pizzas, pastas and traditional Belgian dishes. The atmosphere of the restaurant is often praised, and it is a recommended place to relax after a ride in the Affligem area.

The Welle Mill

Highlight • Monument

The mill is in an elevated position, allowing for picturesque views of the valley and surrounding sweet hills. In fact, on a clear day you can see the Abbey of Affligem and from the Abbey you can see the mill. The structure is well maintained and I always find such buildings remarkable, just as they are part of the heritage and landscape.

The Schiptrekkersbrug is a bridge over the Dender between Denderleeuw and Liedekerke, which is part of the Schiptrekkers cycle route. The bridge is named after the people who used to pull ships across the river using ropes and horses. It was a hard and poor profession, which was also practiced by women and children. The Schiptrekkers Bridge is a tribute to these people, who played an important role in the history of the region. There is a heritage sign on the bridge that tells their story.
