Parish Cemetery in Grodzisk Mazowiecki

Highlight • Historical Site

The cemetery was founded in 1817 and consecrated by parish priest Klemens Szaniawski. The previous cemetery was located around St. Anne's Church. According to locals, the first person buried in the Grodzisk cemetery was a little girl. The oldest burials in the cemetery date back to September 27, 1819, while the oldest preserved tombstone dates back to 1842. In 1866, the cemetery was surrounded by trees and shrubs, and a fence with an iron gate was built.

During World War I, the cemetery area was used by the Russians, who located their artillery point there. In 1915, the Germans designated a place in the Grodzisk cemetery for the burial of their soldiers. During World War II, they ordered Polish graves to be dug up to use the area for the burial of their people; the concrete posts marking off the German part are still in the cemetery today. The cemetery acquired its current area in 1925 and was not expanded later.
