Description
If you're looking for one of Arkansas's most iconic natural attractions, the Cedar Falls – Cedar Falls Trail loop from Petit Jean State Park delivers a rewarding hiking experience. This moderate 2.2-mile (3.5 km) route, with 460 feet (140 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 10 minutes, making it a perfect choice for those seeking a scenic waterfall hike without committing to an all-day trek.
What to expect on Cedar Falls – Cedar Falls Trail loop from Petit Jean State Park
The journey begins with an immediate descent from Mather Lodge, where you'll navigate meticulously crafted stone steps built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. This initial half-mile drops significantly into the Cedar Creek Canyon, leading you through lush woodlands that transition from drier oak-hickory to moist, hemlock-shaded ravine forests. Once at the canyon floor, the trail levels out, following Cedar Creek upstream to the majestic 95-foot Cedar Falls, which plunges into a clear pool surrounded by towering sandstone walls. Be prepared for a steep and tiring climb back out of the canyon; good footwear with ankle support is essential for the often rocky path.
Planning your visit
The trailhead is conveniently located behind the historic Mather Lodge, offering easy access to the Cedar Falls Trail. While no permits are required, the popularity of this trail, especially Cedar Falls itself, means the parking area can fill up quickly during peak times. Arriving earlier in the day is advisable to secure a spot and enjoy a more serene experience. Always wear sturdy hiking boots to navigate the rocky terrain and steep sections safely.
