View of the Ruhr Region

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here there is a great view over the Ruhr area.

In the west you can see the city center of Essen, to the east it continues to Gelsenkirchen with the Veltins Arena and the Scholven dump in the background via the Hohewarth dump in Recklinghausen, very centrally located, to the coal-fired power plant in Datteln, visible to the east.

War Memorial Gevelsberg

Highlight • Monument

"The monument is located in the Gevelsberg city forest. It consists of an approximately 12-15m high rectangular quarry stone column with vertical lettering: U N V E R G E S S E N. The column is supported by wings attached to the side. There is a gold-plated cross on the top. On the back there are later affixed wall plaques of the former Ennepe office.(...) A plaque with an inscription for the dead of World War II was erected in the entrance area.Design: Hans Erwin Nau;Construction management: Peter and Emil Nau, architects.

The panels are labeled alphabetically with the casualties per year of the war. Unfortunately, not all names could be recorded. Dense foliage obscures some of the names listed at the bottom of the panels.
