Kaiserswerth Imperial Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

Directly on the banks of the Rhine rise the picturesque ruins of the Imperial Palace of the legendary Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The palace, originally dating back to the 10th century, was expanded under Emperor Henry III and later by Emperor Barbarossa after he relocated the Rhine toll from the Netherlands to Kaiserswerth, as he needed a fortress dominating the Rhine.

The location for the palace was well chosen. Because the Rhine forms a gentle curve here, it can be clearly seen over a long stretch. Even today, the castle complex consists of imposing walls up to four and a half meters thick. The idyllic castle path offers a magnificent view of the palace.

In the north of Düsseldorf lies Kaiserswerth, one of the most beautiful and richest districts of the Rhine metropolis. Here you can take a relaxed stroll, enjoy the culinary delicacies of the Rhenish cuisine and, above all, the historical ambience. Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa had a powerful fortress built here. The remains of the Imperial Palace can still be visited today.

Haus Werth tow station

Highlight • Historical Site

"...Kaiserswerth was formerly a towing station with horse changing. Elector Carl Theodor had set up the station in 1775. As is well known, horses (and people!) pulled the ships upstream on long lines until motor shipping made this hard work unnecessary around the middle of the 19th century . So the "Towpath" continues from Kaiserswerth to Wittlaer. The beautiful half-timbered building "Haus Werth" was the home of the Wittlaer towing station. The barn and shed are no longer preserved. ..."

Kalkum Castle

Highlight • Castle

Kalkum Castle is Düsseldorf's only moated castle and an outstanding example of neoclassical palace architecture in the Rhineland. The picturesque setting serves as a venue for classical concerts.

In the mid-19th century, the castle gained notoriety due to a protracted divorce dispute between its then owner. The approximately 19-hectare castle park, designed by landscape architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe as an English landscape garden, is now a publicly accessible recreational area.

One preserved relic is the former garden pavilion, which now houses a memorial to the politician Ferdinand Lassalle.

Beautiful tour with some highlights to linger for a moment and let your soul dangle 😉

The motto for the first hike of the new year was: exercise to burn off alcohol. But what really got me going was the icy, stiff wind. I covered the first five kilometers in record time, after that it gradually got warmer.

Today's tour started at Klemensplatz in Kaiserswerth and led my namesake and me past the Imperial Palatinate of Barbarossa, always along the banks of the Rhine. We passed Haus Werth, a former towing station of the Rhine boatmen, and walked to the mouth of the Schwarzbach in the Rhine. We quenched our thirst at Gasthof Brands Jupp and then we …

Today, despite gray weather, but with sun in my heart, started a 12 km lap.

It went from Kaiserswerth via Kalkum to Wittlaer and back to the starting point.

The historic Kaiserswerth is definitely worth a visit, but we also really liked the Kalkum Castle Park and, above all, the Max-Clarenbach-Weg on the Rheinauen near Wittlaer.

... in Dusseldorf 🙈🥳.
Walk along the Rhine where the barges used to be pulled upstream by the tow horses.
Past Haus Werth, the former towing station and on to the Kalkum moated castle, which today houses parts of the State Archives of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Very nice places to stop in the Klemens district 🍻🍷🍧🍹

Today a visit to Florence Nightingale was on the agenda, which I immediately took as an opportunity to indulge in old memories.

It was incredibly beautiful to trudge through the old Florence Nightingale before going into the new buildings for a "visit".

Sunday walk from/to the historic center of Kaiserswerth. A path with many interesting historical buildings, some gastronomic refreshments, a river (Rhine), a Myriameterstein (historical survey stone), a stream (Schwarzbach), a mill and a castle 🏰.
