Abbey of San Dalmazzo di Pedona

Highlight • Religious Site

The Abbey was built on the tomb of San Dalmazzo, martyred according to tradition in 254, and after recent studies, the hypothesis of an early medieval foundation (in the 7th century) attributed to the Lombard queen Teodolinda cannot be excluded. In the eighth century there was the first arrangement of the church decorated with local marbles from the Valdieri quarry.
The formation of the monastic nucleus is documented in the early years of the 10th century when the Benedictine monastery was subjected to the bishop of Asti who in 948 had the relic of the body of San Dalmazzo transferred to Quargnento. After the year 1000 the Abbey became very powerful, its influence extended over about fifty priories from Provence to Pavia. In this period it was enlarged and took on its definitive Romanesque appearance. The ancient church was incorporated in the transformations, on the front remains a trace of the Romanesque facade completed in the XII century. In 1440 the Abbey was
reduced to the summer seat of the bishop of Mondovì. The church was enlarged and the "Angevin chapel" was built which popular tradition attributes to Queen Giovanna d'Angiò, who ascended the throne in 1343.
On the walls are fragments of a cycle of frescoes from the second half of the fifteenth century, with scenes from the life and miracles of the saint.

Municipality of just under 2,000 inhabitants, Demonte is one of the Occitan municipalities in Piedmont. It is located not far from the confluence between the Stura di Demonte and the Cant stream. In addition to the church of San Donato, with its beautiful exposed brick façade, Demonte is known among those who cycle as the starting point of one of the three slopes of Colle Fauniera.
