This difficult 20.0-mile (32.3 km) route packs in 1498 feet (457 metres) of climbing, taking roughly 2 hours and 34 minutes to complete. What to expect on Bay View Trail – China Camp State Park Village loop from Marin Civic Center
The route unfolds as a journey through varied landscapes, starting with an initial two-mile climb via switchbacks from the China Camp Campground area. While the grade is steady, you'll soon find yourself on rolling singletrack near the ridgeline, offering panoramic waterfront views of San Pablo Bay. On clear days, you might even spot Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The terrain shifts between wide singletrack, double track, and fire roads, winding through lush forests, peaceful meadows, and tidal wetlands where wildlife like egrets and deer are often seen. Be prepared for some rocky sections that can be jarring on unsuspended bikes, making this a route best suited for those with good fitness and intermediate riding skills.
Planning your visit
Accessing the trail is straightforward, with free parking available along San Pedro Road, though a $3 trail use fee applies and helps maintain the park. The trails are multi-use, so be mindful and courteous to hikers, runners, and equestrians, especially on busy weekends. Class I pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted, but remember the 15 mph speed limit (5 mph on blind corners). Consider visiting the historic China Camp Village, a preserved Chinese-American shrimp fishing village, which offers a unique historical insight and is well worth a stop for first-timers.
