Gleno Dam and Lake

Highlight • Lake

The climb to the Gleno dam starting from Pianezza can be divided into two halves: the first develops in a medium-dense forest with short panoramic views. The ground is mostly passable with very short uneven points with roots and rocks in sight, while the slope sometimes encourages you to take a breath.
The second half of the route instead extends over a long flat area halfway up the valley that leads to the ruins of the dam. Once flattened, you can initially admire the views of the Presolana and then towards the ruins. The travel time, at an average pace, is around two hours to the lake.
If you do not want to end the walk here, you can continue along the lake and go past it to enter the bottom of the valley and climb towards the Belviso Pass in another two hours or so. Perhaps it is superfluous to add that the views multiply and so does the sense of freedom that you feel crossing the large green spaces of the pastures.

Gleno Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Gleno dam was a barrier on the Gleno stream which collapsed on 1 December 1923, causing a huge tragedy which shocked the Scalve valley in the province of Bergamo and the Camonica valley in the province of Brescia.
The dam was built between 1916 and 1923. 260 meters long, it was the only example in the world of a mixed gravity dam with multiple arches.

The Gleno valley, right from the ruins of the dam, offers a fantastic view of the northern side of the Queen of the Orobie, the Presolana.

Pianezza is a beautiful village, a hamlet of Vilminore di Scalve, famous for being the starting point for the path that leads to the Gleno dam. It can be reached by car, except in the summer period when it is closed to traffic and therefore only reachable on foot or by shuttle.

Also this year as usual the little trip to the dam is always a spectacle

What a monument and what a moving story almost 100 years ago.
After completion and the first filling, the dam broke on December 1, 1923; several hundred people died in the disaster. A curved gravity dam was originally planned. The gorge in the valley floor was initially closed with a 23 m high "plug" made of quarry stone masonry. Thus, …

The Gleno Dam was built until 1923. In 1924, the dam burst, claiming over 350 lives in the valley.

Excursion within the reach (almost) of everyone with moderate height difference and slope but which offers truly breathtaking landscapes and views. Without neglecting the memory and teaching that what remains of the dam leaves us.

Very nice but tiring walk. Training is needed...

Pleasant loop excursion with the aim of seeing the Gleno dam, famous for its collapse on 1.12.1923 and which caused the death of 356 people. The paths to reach it are different. I left the car in Vilminore at a small church (locality Bares) near which the path starts. Parking is paid (easypark) only from June to the end of …
