Dicker Turm (Esslingen on the Neckar)

Highlight • Monument

Esslinger Burg with Dicke Turm, Seilergang and Stäffele, Esslingen am Neckar

Description
The Esslinger Burg towers over the historic old town of Esslingen am Neckar with its characteristic silhouette of Hochwacht, Seilergang and Dicke Turm – yet it was never a castle at any time.
Knights and princesses never lived in the Esslinger Burg – it was merely the northernmost part of the massive city fortifications. First mentioned in documents in 1314, the fortifications of the imperial city of Esslingen were further expanded between 1519 and 1531.
The Dicke Turm was built in 1527, but only received its hood in 1887, modeled after the towers of Nuremberg Castle. In 1976/77, the Dicke Turm and the castle's outdoor areas were thoroughly renovated for the city's 1200th anniversary.
Burgplatz
The Inner Burgplatz with its fountain and boxwood-lined beds is modeled after medieval paradise gardens. Circular beds embedded in the lawn dominate the Outer Burgplatz. Every summer, exquisite open-air events with open-air cinema, classical, jazz, and rock concerts take place there. The view over the city and the Neckar valley to the Swabian Jura is extremely impressive. The short climb from the castle can be comfortably chosen via the Steige through the vineyard.
A large children's playground at the Outer Burgplatz is ideal for the little ones.
Enjoying the Esslinger Burg
In the warm months, summer can be perfectly enjoyed at the numerous events on the Burgplatz in a dreamlike setting. The castle visit is enjoyably rounded off with a sparkling wine tasting at KESSLER Karree 18, the oldest sparkling wine cellar in Germany.

City Archives, Esslingen am Neckar
All Saints Chapel / City Archives
Behind the city church lies the former All Saints Chapel - today's city archives - one of the sights in Esslingen
Description
Behind the city church lies the former All Saints Chapel - today's city archives. It was first mentioned in documents in 1324 and converted into the city archives by Heinrich Schickhardt in 1610. Since the former cemetery, directly adjacent to the All Saints Chapel, was not very large, the bones of older burials were brought to the three-aisled cellar, which thus became the city's ossuary. The original chapel room is on the upper floor.
With around 10,000 certificates, documents and volumes from imperial city times and more recent times, the Esslingen City Archives is one of the most important municipal archives in southwest Germany. Daily events have been recorded in a chronicle from 1803 to the present day.
An extensive scientific library is available for research purposes.

Description
The market square is the only square in the old town of Esslingen that is not historical. Until 1811 the square was built over by the Katharinenspital, the city's first hospital. After that it was called Spitalplatz for a long time. The actual market square was the town hall square at the time. Today the market square is a place where people like to celebrate. The Citizens' Festival, the Onion Festival and the Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market take place there every year.

Little Venice (Esslingen on the Neckar)

Highlight • Historical Site

The view across the Rossneckar River to the houses on the Inner Bridge is called "Little Venice." At the city archives, a narrow passage leads down to the Kesselwasen, where two waterwheels are still in operation. I highly recommend strolling through the alleys here. 🤩👍🏻

Maille Park, Esslingen

Highlight • Rest Area

The small park that stretches between the two arms of the Neckar below the Inner Bridge is called Maille. You can tell a real Esslinger by the correct pronunciation of the park name - it is actually Mallje.
The park is named after the ball game palle-malle, which came to Germany from Italy in the Baroque era and is a precursor to today's croquet. This game of skill used to be played on the floating island.

Wolf Gate (Esslingen am Neckar)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wolf Gate is an impressive testimony to the defensive strength of the old town. It is the oldest preserved gate in Esslingen and was built in the first half of the 13th century as part of the city wall. This is where the trade route from the south led into the city. The two almost life-sized stone lions above the passageway are symbols of the power of the Staufers. The smooth blocks in the lower part are characteristic, and were intended to prevent enemies from climbing the tower. Above them are humped blocks typical of the Staufer period. A wolf relief can be seen inside above the doorway. The gate received its delicate bell tower in the 17th century.
