Hard road ride. Very good fitness required. Mostly well-paved surfaces and easy to ride. The starting point of the route is right next to a parking lot.

Ecorbans Pass - 853 m

Highlight • Other

Road pass, can be done from Ranchal or from the Azergues valley. Passage of the GR7 nearby with a beautiful gravel path.
Unobstructed view both in the climb and at the top in the fir and Douglas fir forests. On the other hand a lot of shade, practical in summer. A great forest atmosphere especially in wet weather and in the fog.
Bitumen relatively good in one part then quite grainy, classic in Haut-Beaujolais. Passage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2022.

Col des Aillets (715 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Pass to do in the sequence between the Ecorbans and the Echarmeaux. No big drop offs, fairly gritty road, wide and few viewpoints. Well shaded and fairly uncrowded road. It doesn't look like it's a pass and yet!

Col de la Croix Nicelle (782 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Nice pass to do from St Bonnet le Troncy, from St Nizier d'Azergues, or in the descent from Favardy. On the bike course of the Lac des Sapins triathlon to spice it up with a little d+. From St Nizier the climb is quite long with good percentages. The points of view are not legion. The view at the pass is not too present, you have to move to have a view (especially in the direction of Favardy). The pass is seldom used, which makes it all the more enjoyable. You can take the GR7 forest path in gravel or mountain biking from the pass. The cross is located at the very beginning of the descent to St Bonnet on the left at the edge of the forest.

Col de Favardy (862 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Nice pass to do from the Azergues valley via St Nizier and the Col de la Croix Nicelle: until the Croix Nicelle the percentages are around 7/8% then the final flattens out. From Ranchal or from St Vincent de Reins via St Bonnet le Troncy, the climbs are less complicated but long because the pass is quite high at 862 m. The view at the top is non-existent but the forest atmosphere can be appreciable in foggy weather which gives it a mysterious atmosphere. Many gravel or mountain bike trails converge here and the GR7 passes by.
