St. John the Baptist Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Rinaldo I laid the first stone in 1723 on the site of a building from 1190 and a sixteenth-century building dedicated to San Michele, the current church took its name from the Confraternity of San Giovanni Battista della Buona Morte, a company dedicated to assisting those condemned to capital punishment, which moved here in 1774.
It is the only church in Modena that is not annexed to other buildings. With harmonious lines, typically neoclassical, the chapel was designed by Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti. The interior has a circular plan; the lantern reaches 22 meters in height. The choir with the eighteenth-century organ by Agostino Traeri occupies the counterfaçade. In the choir, note the Beheading of the Baptist by Francesco Vellani (18th century); in the chapel on the left, commissioned by the shoemakers' corporation, a 1734 canvas by Antonio Consetti (note the mountain taking flight supported by angels in the background); in the one on the right, from 1723, also by Antonio Consetti, Madonna and Saints commissioned by the coachmen's corporation (the gate is by Malagoli). Numerous Este eagles hang on the walls. To the right of the altar, the Madonna della Mercede or delle Catene is from 1897. But the most significant attraction of the church is the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Giudo Mazzoni: dating back to 1479, it is the oldest work of its kind in the world. The expressions of the subjects are intense (most likely copied from models alive at the time) and the drama of the scene. In the small room before the sacristy, you can see some bloody objects - mostly copies - that were used for the capital executions of the condemned (after they had been comforted and made to repent, as well as drugged with herbs by the brothers). From here you pass into the area behind the altar, where the wooden benches hosted the friars during the celebrations. In the sacristy: reliquaries, coffin covers, votive lamps and a tapestry used in processions to the scaffold with the famous inscription, taken from Qohelet, «vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas».

Church of Our Lady of the Vow

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church was built to fulfill the Vow made by the people of Modena to the Madonna della Ghiara, so that she would put an end to the terrible plague of 1630.

The works began in 1634 and were completed around 1640 under the direction of the architect Cristoforo Malagola, known as Galaverna, who took the Bolognese church of San Salvatore as a model. The dome recalls that of the Basilica of the Madonna della Ghiara in Reggio, where the miraculous image of the Virgin is venerated.

Among the paintings exhibited here, we remember the Pala della Peste by Ludovico Lana in which, through images, the story that led to the construction of the Church is narrated. The canvas reproduces the Madonna della Ghiara of Reggio, on whose right are depicted San Geminiano and S. Omobono, the two protectors of Modena. On the left of the Virgin, are depicted Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, figures linked to suffering and illness.

Of great interest are two paintings by Francesco Stringa, depicting the Transit of the Virgin and the Death of Saint Joseph.

Piazza Grande

Highlight • Historical Site

The Piazza del Duomo, built in the twelfth century, took the name Grande from the second half of the seventeenth century. It has always been the place from which the political power of the representatives of the citizens is administered, but also the religious power of the church, as the cathedral stands next to it.

Modena Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

If its official name is the metropolitan cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo and San Geminiano, the cathedral of Modena is known by this name among those who live in the city, of which this is the main place of worship. Consecrated in 1184, it has a Romanesque architectural style and in 1934 Pope Pius XI elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica. Of particular value are the bas-reliefs on Genesis sculpted by Wiligelmo.
