The port of Hamburg is stunningly beautiful. It's the most beautiful port in Northern Germany. A harbor tour is highly recommended.

The route is ideal for cycling and offers a great panorama. There is no better way to get from the Elbe bridges to the Speicherstadt by bike.

Speicherstadt (Warehouse District)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Speicherstadt was built between 1883 and 1927 south of the old town on the former Elbe islands and residential quarters of Kehrwieder and Wandrahm as part of the Hamburg Free Port in three phases; the first phase was completed in 1888. The construction management was carried out by the chief engineer of the Hamburg Building Deputation, Franz Andreas Meyer. He was assisted by the hydraulic engineering director Christian Nehls and the building director Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann, as well as a consortium of 15 engineers, 24 architects and draftsmen. Of these, Georg Thielen designed around 30 warehouses at the Neuer Wandrahm, Am Sandtorkai, Auf dem Sande, Brook and Kehrwieder locations.

Since 1 January 2003, the Speicherstadt has been excluded from the area of the free port (dissolved in 2013); on 1 March 2008, together with the new development area on the Grosser Grasbrook, it was declared administratively part of the HafenCity district in the Hamburg-Mitte district.

Nikolaifleet

Highlight • River

The Nikolaifleet is a fleet in Hamburg and used to be the main estuary of the Alster into the Elbe. The development of the port of Hamburg began here in 1188, and goods were transferred to the warehouses here by water until the 19th century. With the creation of the Speicherstadt, this part of the harbor lost its importance.

After the Hamburg fire, which broke out on May 5, 1842 in a house on Deichstrasse near Nikolaifleet, Hamburg's city center was largely redesigned, among other things to make room for a new town hall and the town hall market. At the end of the 19th century, the main outflow of the Alster was diverted into the continuously navigable Alsterfleet. At the southern end of the Nikolaifleet, between the Holzbrücke and Hoher Brücke, lies the last remaining section of the fleet with the typical old Hamburg buildings. The narrow, high fleet fronts of the outer dike houses on Deichstrasse are diagonally opposite those of four preserved storage facilities on the Cremon.

The Nikolaifleet is exposed to the tidal range of the Elbe and is partially dry at low tide. After the storm surge of 1962, a small barrier was built south of the Hohe Brücke, which can be closed in the event of storm surges.[1] A weir between the Nikolaifleet and the Mönkedammfleet seals off the tidal range from the other fleets in the city center.

View of the Speicherstadt

Highlight • Viewpoint

Whether it's Miniatur Wunderland, the water castle, or the traditional ship harbor,
a trip to the Speicherstadt is a must for any visit to Hamburg.

Since July 2015, the Speicherstadt, together with the Kontorhausviertel (Accounting District),
including the Chilehaus, has been Germany's 40th UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse complex in the world and covers approximately 26 hectares between Baumwall and Oberhafen.

The complex was built between 1883 and the end of the 1920s on thousands of oak piles and has been a listed building since 1991.

Since 2008, the Speicherstadt has been administratively part of the new HafenCity development in the Hamburg-Mitte district, which sets modern accents through the predominant use of contemporary building materials such as glass and steel.

A fascinating contrast to the neo-Gothic brick architecture of the Speicherstadt.

August 27, 2022,Morgendliche Hamburg Hafenrundfahrt mit einem Stadtrad
Tour from August 26th, 2022: This tour wasn't actually planned at all, but since I woke up before my alarm clock again (me: 1:20 a.m. --> alarm clock 3:00 a.m.), I didn't want to turn around again and on the autobahn I had made it to Hamburg and had enough time in the morning, I decided spontaneously for a short …
