San Rossore Estate

Highlight • Forest

The San Rossore Estate, corresponding to the area between the Aurelia state road and the mouths of the Arno and Serchio rivers, is part of the larger natural park of San Rossore-Migliarino-Massaciuccoli.
It is a predominantly wooded area, rich in biodiversity, where deer, antelopes, wild boars, wolves, wild cows, horses, cattle and for a certain period (up to the middle of the twentieth century), even dromedaries live.
For its beauty and its healthiness, until 1999 it was the preferred seat of the sovereigns of the Lorraine dynasty first and of the Savoy dynasty later and finally of the Presidency of the Republic; therefore access was restricted. It was subsequently opened to the public, albeit with certain limitations.

The estate is open from 7.30 to 19.30. It can be reached from the Aurelia state road, taking the Viale delle Cascine at the traffic lights. There are three entrances: from Ponte alle Trombe, from the Punta gate, from the Marmo cycle-pedestrian gate. There are parking areas.

Inside, along the free-access paths, independent walks are possible; while in the areas accessible only with guided tours there are many organized activities, including (booking required), tour by train to the sea, boat cruise between nature and the riverside and grand tour from the city to the park by boat and excursion to San Rossore.

For information on costs and reservations, call the Visitor Center: 050-530101. For info 330206235, 050531910, info@sanrossoreincarrozza.it, sanrossoreincarrozza.it.
At the visitor center from 9 to 18.30 it is possible to rent bikes and cycle carriages. Finally, the "Equitiamo" riding school offers medium or long-term horseback riding and a riding school, always by reservation: 3383662431,3494277315,
