Tanners' Quarter (former tanners' district)

Highlight • Other

The tanners' quarter is made up of tall half-timbered houses, most of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries. These buildings were once home to the families of tanners who lived, worked and dried their skins on the top floor. Between 1698 and 1974, the tanners' quarter was extensively restored, giving the city center its splendor again.

Maison Pfister (Pfistererhaus)

Highlight • Monument

THE PFISTER HOUSE, Colmar

This bourgeois house was built in 1537 by the hatter Louis Scherer, who came from Besançon and had become wealthy through the operation of silver mines in the Val de Lièpvre. Although it dates from the Renaissance period, it is still strongly influenced by medieval architecture. The pictorial design, which combines allegories and figures from the Old and New Testaments with imperial portraits, clearly demonstrates the affinity of wealthy merchants for the humanist culture of the Renaissance.

Cour du Weinhof 14th eeuw

Highlight • Other

At this location you can admire the medieval building from the 14th century from a distance. Keep your distance and out of respect for the residents you can enjoy this piece of history. Respect the marked marking line on the ground.
If everyone adheres to this distance rule, we can enjoy this medieval courtyard for decades to come.

Voltaire's House

Highlight • Monument

House where Voltaire lived in the period 1753 - 1754
Historical interpretation:
In October 1753, Voltaire arrived in Colmar to work on his Annales de l'Empire together with the French advisors of the Conseil Souverain and their rich libraries. He also wanted to follow the typographical adaptations of his work on the presses of JF Schoepflin. He found shelter with Madame Gall, the wife of the mayor, in a 15th-century noble house, rebuilt in 1609.

Voltaire's stay, which lasted only thirteen months, was particularly eventful because of his disputes with the very influential Jesuit brothers in the city and who opposed the works of the philosopher of the Enlightenment. Despite much misplaced criticism of Colmar, which he described as "a half-French, half-German and completely Iroquois city", it appears that he nevertheless enjoyed his stay in Colmar.

Saint Martin's Collegiate Church, Colmar

Highlight • Religious Site

Built from 1235 to 1365, the Collegiate Church of St. Martin is a major work of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The roof truss and the crowning of the south tower were destroyed in a fire in 1572. It was replaced three years later by the original onion-shaped skylight, which gives the building its characteristic silhouette. The church has undergone several restoration works. The last one, completed in 1982, exposed the foundations of a church from around the year 1000, as well as traces of successive additions in the 11th and 12th centuries.
For a long time, the Colmarer regarded the collegiate church of St. Martin as their cathedral ("Münster"). In fact, the collegiate church was not really a cathedral for about ten years: from the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1790 to the signing of the Concordat in 1801.

House of Heads

Highlight • Historical Site

THE HEAD HOUSE, Colmar
The bourgeois house was built in 1609 in the Rhenish Renaissance style and owes its name to the unusual decoration of 105 grotesque masks. A magnificent two-storey bay window with a balcony above adorns the façade, which is irregularly punctuated by windows with carved pillars. At the very top of the curved gable stands a bronze Alsatian cooper, created by Auguste Bartholdi. It is a reminder that the house was once used as a wine exchange.

A first small impression of the city center of Colmar. Conclusion: It is very touristy in Colmar, coupled with historical buildings.

Burst in the middle of the lunch break. The city was as empty as a Sunday morning.

But it was still a sight for sore eyes, as always.

🚶‍♀️ Bonjour, today a short trip to France to the beautiful city of Colmar 🇫🇷

The old town is characterized by cobbled streets and half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It almost looks like a doll's house and is unique.

I really liked it and I could see the Vosges from a distance ⛰️
