Heppenheim is the district town of the Bergstraße district in southern Hesse and is located on the Bergstraße road at the edge of the Odenwald forest. The town, with a population of just over 25,000 (2015), was first mentioned in 755, and was granted city rights in 1318.
The town lies on the state border with Baden-Württemberg. The town itself lies below the Schloßberg hill with the medieval Starkenburg castle. "Bergstraße" (Bergstrasse) is the name given to both the road (today's Bundesstraße 3) running from Darmstadt to Heidelberg along the western edge of the Odenwald and the eastern edge of the Rhine plain, as well as to the surrounding landscape. It is characterized by an exceptionally mild and sunny climate with particularly early blossoming trees. The city's coat of arms is divided and split at the bottom. It depicts the red and silver striped Hessian lion at the top, growing to the right on a blue background, with a golden crown and a silver sword with a gold handle in its right paw. In the lower right field is the red Lorsch Nagelspitz Cross on a silver background, and at the bottom left is the Mainz Wheel, six-spoked silver on a red background. Heppenheim boasts a largely preserved, self-contained, picturesque old town center with an area of approximately six hectares, in which almost all of the city's sights are located, with the exception of Starkenburg Castle. The old town is characterized by half-timbered buildings, which were largely built during reconstruction in the first decades after Heppenheim's destruction in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1693 on the remains of the medieval town. However, only fragments of the city walls, which were largely demolished in the first half of the 19th century, remain.
