Catholic Church of St. Stephen, Tiefencastel

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Stefan's Catholic Church, Tiefencastel
The stately baroque church rises on a rock at the foot of which the Albula and Julia rivers flow together. As early as 1185, a chapel of St. Stephen existed on "Suloms". In 1519, the church was fundamentally restored for the first time. On March 13, 1649, the community signed a contract with Father Fidele da Crema, according to which the old parish church was to be dismantled and a new building built. The shell of the building was erected as early as 1650-52 by the Misox masters Martino Tovelli, Cesare Bellono and Girolamo da Salsino. The carpentry work was carried out by Master Bernet from Montafon. The stucco work was done by Giovanni Zuccali in 1652. These master builders were members of large master families from Roveredo who had been active in Graubünden since the 16th century. On June 28, 1660, the new church was consecrated by the Chur bishop Ulrich de Mont.
A significant turning point in history occurred on May 11, 1890. A major fire destroyed large parts of the village. 24 houses, 34 stable buildings and parts of the church and the church tower were affected. The roof, the bells, the gallery and the organ were destroyed, while the interior furnishings largely escaped the firestorm. In 1892, the church was repaired. In 1931, the frescoes were improperly restored and partially painted over. In 1972-82, the pictures were returned to their original state. The exterior facade was restored in 1957, an interior renovation was carried out in 1981-82 and a new gallery was built in 1982, on which the new organ from the Mathis company from Näfels found its place. Shortly before the merger of the parishes in the Albula Valley in 2017, the interior of the church was cleaned of soot and dust and gently renovated.
