Market Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The three male figures each represent an economic sector that was of particular importance to Schönebeck. One of the figures depicts a boatman with a long-spear and oilskins, leaning on an anchor. He symbolizes fishing and shipping. Another figure, looking towards the town hall, shows a miner equipped with a helmet and a mining lamp. He is a symbol of salt and lignite mining. The third figure shows a worker with an apron, hammer, and gear, representing industry.

Schönebeck marketplace

Highlight • Historical Site

The marketplace is very well maintained. In the summer, the children romp in the water feature. Passing this place on the Way of St. James, it offers an excellent opportunity for refreshment.

Napoleon plaque
How the Quadriga came to Schönebeck

She's back! Erwin Garrandt discovered the memorial plaque on the Elbe. It was dismantled for a construction site.
By Andre Schneider 08.09.2020, 11:01 PM

Schönebeck / Welsleben l When the Swedish pop group Abba landed a world hit with the title “Waterloo”, they probably had no idea that they could have composed their text on “Schönebeck” without any problems. The small town in Belgium, which became world famous through the song, was once the undoing of the French Emperor Napoelon Bonaparte. After a defeat, however, the warlike emperor also had a relationship with the city on the Elbe - albeit not entirely voluntarily.

The year is 1807. The French war emperor once again showed his inglorious intentions. He had the Quadriga kidnapped from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Monstrous! After all, the Reiter-Ensemble in the Berlin district of Mitte is considered the landmark of today's Federal Republic.

But the French cheeky badger had done the math without the rest of Europe. The Quadriga in Paris - that would be even better! After a number of European armies fled Napoleon in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the way back to Berlin was clear for the Quadriga. The Paris landmark's journey began.

And it led via Schönebeck. A small plaque on the Elbe reminds us of this today. Because there was a construction site on the site recently, it was not open to the public. Volksstimme reader Erwin Garrandt pointed out to the editors that it is now back on the spot. Recessed into the wall at the Elbtor parking lot. It informs visitors that the Quadriga passed the region via Welsleben, via Groß Salze to Schönebeck. The salt gate was obviously too narrow. That is why the Quadriga took a detour via Böttcherstrasse, through the Barbyer Tor to the market square. There was a festive mood there. The next day, on June 3, 1814, the valuable freight was shipped over the Elbe at the ferry station where cars are parked today and continued on its way to Berlin. Reason enough for the Elbufer-Förderverein to install a memorial plaque.

Bürgerpark Salineinsel

Highlight • Rest Area

On the Saaleradweg tour you almost pass it, at the Salineninsel Bürgerpark. My tip, make this really small detour and just let this beautifully landscaped park with many explanations on the subject of salt / salt extraction work its magic on you.

Half-timbered houses on the Elbe Cycle Path

Highlight • Historical Site

Idyllic half-timbered row houses directly on the banks of the Elbe. There is also a place to stop for a bite to eat, perfect for a short break.

Salzblume Sculpture on the Elbe

Highlight • Monument

Here there is the Salzländer Kulturstempel No. 27.

The 16 m high and 12 m wide sculpture stands directly on the Elbe. The foundation is a pan salt crystal, as it once was in the Siedepfannen. The structure is a replica of the framework of the old Salzspeicher, some of which have been preserved in Schönebeck. Triangular elements refer to the three closely related to the salt districts Bad Salzelmen, Frohse and Schönebeck. The sails are reminiscent of the sailing ship traffic on the Elbe and the wings of seagulls.
