Standing Stones of Stony Leas

Highlight • Monument

Definitely worth stopping here on your ride to enjoy the moorland (delightfully purple in the spring and summer months). There is a standing stone here, just a few steps from the trig point. Maps show two hill names here: Louven Howe and Stony Leas, but it's the Stony Leas that has the trig point.

Excellent, far-reaching views from here in every direction, and the Fylingdales MOD (Ministry of Defence) complex is visible in the distance.

Hole of Horcum

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Hole of Horcum is a 120 m deep, 1.2 km wide natural amphitheatre sunk into the valley of Levisham Beck. Legend has it that it was created by a giant grabbing a handful of earth to throw at his wife. It’s actually created by spring sapping - erosion of the bedrock by underground water, which then causes collapse. This repeated process causes the hole.
