View of Salisbury Cathedral from Harnham Slope

Highlight • Forest

Harnham Slope, also known as Harnham Hill, is a pretty forested area situated on the southern outskirts of the city of Salisbury.

The vegetation is made up of deciduous forest and there are some wonderful vantage points looking over the city centre.

Harnham Bridge (Ayleswade Bridge)

Highlight • Historical Site

One of Salisbury’s medieval bridges, Harnham Bridge (also named Ayleswade Bridge) is not only lovely itself, but offers pretty views up and down the River Avon. It dates back to the 1200s and is technically two bridges; its midpoint is an island.

From the bridge you can see the top of the cathedral’s spire and the novelist William Golding is said to have spotted it from the bridge and considered it one of the bridge’s best attributes.

Salisbury Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Salisbury Cathedral can be seen for miles around and is the elaborate heart of this small and beautiful city. Renowned for its English Gothic architecture, the cathedral dates back to the 1200s and has the tallest church spire in the UK. Not only that, the cloisters and close are the largest in Britain.

Think that’s enough? Not for Salisbury. The cathedral is home to the most well-preserved of four copies of the Magna Carta and has a verge and foliot clock, one of the oldest working clocks in the world. The subject of several John Constable paintings, it’s a beautiful sight and surrounded by stunning historic buildings.

View of Salisbury Cathedral

Highlight • Historical Site

With some searching you can walk along the rivers in the shade: that is very worthwhile. Too bad the access is through the industrial estate; it could be made more attractive on that point.
