View of Alton Barnes White Horse

One of Wiltshire's many white chalk horses, the Alton Barnes White Horse was cut in the early 1800s on the request of a local farmer. Well-maintained and much-visited, the horse lies just under a mile north of the village of Alton on the Pewsey Downs. Also on the hill is a long barrow and several examples of cross dykes, which are prehistoric earthworks.

The White Horse Trail passes right past it while the Ridgeway and the Great Stones Way pass nearby.

Milk Hill 294m, Pewsey Down, Wiltshire (County High Top).
A longish but easy walk over undulating hills to get Milk Hill, the county top for Wiltshire. Thought I would do Tan Hill as well to bag a trig point. Turns out there was no summit marker on Milk Hill or a Trig Point on Tan Hill. Still, a lovely walk and well worth doing.

Route Statistics: Easy undulating trails with minimal ascent really. 9.2km done in 2hrs with 250m of height gain.

Silbury Hill

Highlight • Monument

Silbury Hill is the largest artificial mound in Europe. It is similar in height and volume to the Egyptian pyramids. Whilst the hill is a bit of a mystery to historians, experts believe it was completed in around 2400 BC. There are no burials within the hill and its purpose and significance remain unknown. The site is managed by English Heritage.

Avebury lies about 10 miles (16 km) south of Swindon and is a massive prehistoric site with open access to Stone Circles. The main Great Circle is surrounded by a deep man-made trench creating a mound which is nearly a mile round.

Overton Hill and Start of The Ridgeway National Trail

Highlight • Historical Site

From the 571-foot (174 m) summit of Overton Hill, you are afforded a magnificent view of the rolling landscape. You can also observe several round barrow burial mounds on the hill, which date to the Iron Age. The Ridgeway National Trail begins its 87-mile (139 km) journey from here.
