Y Garn Summit (Nantlle Ridge)

Highlight • Viewpoint

Y Garn is the first summit on the Nantlle Ridge from Rhyd Ddu. Its steep northeast face gives it an intimidating apperance but the normal route of ascent is relatively straightforward, missing the stacked contours by taking you up its broad eastern flanks.

From Y Garn's summit you can enjoy the Nantlle Ridge's most iconic sight: the arrowhead of Mynydd Drws-y-Coed backed by the craggy Trum y Ddysgl. If completing the traverse, this is the way ahead – an exciting prospect indeed.

Mynydd Drws-y-Coed summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

This is quite simply the best and most interesting section of the Nantlle Ridge. Sandwiched between Y Garn to the east and Trum y Ddysgl to the west, and technically a subsidiary top of the latter, Mynydd Drws-y-Coed’s summit is narrow, exposed, scrambly, and the undisputed highlight of the traverse.

Mynydd Drws-y-Coed

Highlight • Natural Monument

The grade one scramble to attain Mynydd Drws-y-Coed from Y Garn is undoubtedly the most spectacular section of the Nantlle Ridge. At 2,280 feet (695 m) and being relatively close to the sea, the chances of catching the summit and the scramble in full winter conditions are slimmer than on the likes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Carneddau. However, when the opportunity arises, it makes for a superb objective.

Trum y Ddysgl

Highlight • Viewpoint

Trum Y Ddysgl is the most scenic of the summits on The Nantlle Ridge. The views from this angle are glorious on a sky blue day.

Where I did highlight, there are many fallen trees from the storm, and they block the route completely. To pass, you must navigate through those trees, I am not recommending that.
Route was still blocked on 1 of March 2025.

Along the paths, you will regularly find rows of fallen trees, felled by strong gusts of wind.
