Okehampton Station

Highlight • Structure

Ignore the out dated previous post. Okehampton station now has a regular train service and is an incredible gateway to some of the most accessible and stunning rides in the country (e.g. to Barnstaple and Plymouth) allowing you to complete your adventures by train. Don't miss.....

Fitz's Well Cross

Highlight • Natural Monument

Legend tells of a couple out walking on the moor who encountered the local Pixies (Piskies) who brought down a mist to prevent them from finding their way. After much walking around in circles, the couple found a well and partook of the waters.

This instantly broke the Piskies' spell, and they could make their way down to Okehampton. In gratitude, the couple erected a cross by the well, so that anyone could find it, take the water and dispel the Piskies' spells.

The well itself is now covered in granite slabs, but the cross is still there.

High Willhays summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

The highest point on Dartmoor and the highest summit south of the Brecon Beacons. Very accessible and an easy hike for most people to do. The best thing is the wonderful views, especially on a sky blue spring day like today. Love raw and rugged Dartmoor!❤️

Yes Tor summit

Highlight • Summit

The second highest point in Dartmoor National Park offers stunning vistas of North Devon and Cornwall. Note: it is close to a military range, so check for firing times before your visit (dartmoor-ranges.co.uk/firing_notice_1.html). Always start out well equipped on tours through Dartmoor!

West Mill Tor

Highlight • Summit

If you are hiking to Yes Tor, don't pass by West Mill Tor without a visit. It almost looks like the ruins of a castle and is very recognisable.

The views from up here take you all the way across to Exmoor National Park in the north or south west to Yes Tor. Simply stunning.

October 12, 2023,Day 5: High Willhays loop – Dartmoor
This was an extra day hike to get up to the highest point in Dartmoor, High Willhays, affectionately known as ‘High Willys’. It was a very wet, foggy day, but that just added to the fun. I started and ended at Okehampton train station, so it’s a hike that’s easily accessible by public transport. All in all, the hike wasn’t …
