Wesel-Datteln Canal

Highlight • River

The Wesel-Datteln Canal is a federal waterway in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and, after the Rhine, the busiest waterway in Germany. The shipping canal runs through the northern Ruhr area and connects the Rhine near Wesel with the Dortmund-Ems Canal at the Datteln waterway junction. The 60 km long canal runs parallel to the south of the Lippe in its immediate vicinity.

The Alte Fahrt is a disused branch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. With the growing ship traffic on the canal, various side arms had to be built as early as 1929, just 30 years after it was opened. Larger ships in particular were able to use side arms of the canal and thus avoid each other. Many years later the main canal was widened at the crucial points and the so-called second voyages were dismantled or separated from the main canal. Many of the former tributaries are now closed biotopes and invite you to go on discovery tours on foot or by bike.

View of the bridge of the Alte Fahrt from 1893. There is now a bike path where the ships used to go.

A very nice bike path between Hullern and Olfen. Also part of the new Steverland route.

Beautiful lake to rest and relax, also suitable for fishing, swimming and boating.

Halterner Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

... a worthwhile destination, cycling around the lake is also recommended. Especially the north side (one side of the forest, the other with a view of the lake) invites you to linger with numerous benches ... The south side is always quite busy on weekends. . .

Halterner Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

Great starting point for a walk around the lake. It's the largest drinking water extraction facility, which is why swimming is prohibited everywhere.
