Laterns

Highlight • Settlement

lanterns
Laterns was first mentioned in 1177. Records prove the name "Montem Clauturni" at that time. Settlers settled in the town from the beginning of the 14th century. Today the municipality consists of three districts: Innerlaterns, Laterns-Bonacker and Laterns-Thal.
Paradise for hikers
Laterns is a walker's paradise during the summer months. At 2,004 meters high, the striking peak of the Hoher Freschen can be seen from afar. But also wild and romantic gorges await hikers. The "Bad Gorge" can be reached directly from Laterns. Hikers should wear good shoes and be sure-footed: the path is demanding. However, the sight of rock and wild water, crowned by a waterfall at the end of the gorge, makes up for all the effort.

St. Nicholas Parish Church, Laterns

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish Church of St. Nicholas, Laterns

Relevant dates of the church:
1411: Construction of a small chapel, 1500: construction of a larger church, 1673: expansion of the existing church, 1892: restoration of the church. The wonderful wooden ceiling on consoles is adorned with five paintings by Alfons Luger (1901). A special gem can be found in the front window on the right: a small pane with an image of the Immaculate Conception from 1507. The baptismal font, an octagonal blind tracery, also dates from the same period. It was returned to its original position inside the church during the restoration and is once again used for baptisms. The original crest of the baptismal font is by Fidelis Rudhardt.

Mary of the Snows Chapel, Bonacker

Highlight • Religious Site

"Maria Schnee" Chapel Bonacker in the Laternsertal
In addition to a number of chapels in the Laternsertal, the “Maria Schnee” chapel in Bonacker is not only the largest, but also the most important. According to records, it was built in 1641. During the restoration of the chapel in 1959, writings were found in the tower ball, which had unfortunately been destroyed by the weather and became illegible.
