Piercebridge Roman Fort

Archaeological Site

These remains are all that’s left of a large Roman bridge that carried Dere Street, the Roman road that linked York with Corbridge, across the River Tees. The reason the bridge is so far from the Tees is that the river has moved significantly since it was constructed. The bridge was part of a much larger Roman site, which includes a fort and civilian settlements, which is known to have existed from at least the 3rd century AD. The site is open during daylight hours and is free to enter. For more information, visit: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/piercebridge-roman-bridge.
