Middleham Village Square & Racehorse Parade

Highlight • Historical Site

The racehorses train every morning on the gallops above Middleham/Coverham. They return to the stables from around 10:45. We all know that horses don't understand humans on bikes. If you are descending Coverdale into Middleham between 10:45 & 12:30, please be prepared to show a little patience. It can take 10 minutes to cover 800m. At other times, this is a fast clear run into Middleham. If you are riding out of Middleham at this time, then there's no issue. The horses can see you & you won't be going fast on the uphill drag either!

From the bridge over the River Swale there is a wonderful view of Richmond Castle.

The castle is a Norman Fortress, built to keep in check 'the rebellious North' in 1086. It is the most well-preserved Norman castle in England following restoration in the 19th century.

The castle is open to the public, for more information visit the website

Bedale Market Town

Highlight • Cafe

Bedale is a thriving market town centred round a cobbled, Georgian square. It still continues its 750 year tradition of holding its market on a Tuesday. As it is on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales it makes for a great base for exploring further.

There are a number of great cafes in the town or for something cycling specific try the Tandem Cafe on the Bedale Road heading north east from the centre.

There a number of interesting historic buildings in Bedale, including Bedale Hall, the Leech House (used by an apothecary to store leeches) and the Old Grammar School.

Masham Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Masham Bridge is a grade II listed building over the River Ure. It replaced an ancient bridge in 1754

There are lovely tree-lined views in either direction as it takes the A6108 into Masham or out towards Low Burton Hall.

Masham Market Square

This 4 mile walk - the Masham leaves walk is a route with 6 stone leaves sculptures. The route follows some beautiful stretches of the river Ure and the river Burn.
Masham is a town with two breweries and a top selection of pubs for your post exercise refreshments!

This is where Annemiek van Vleuten attacked and started her 105 km solo ride to victory in the 2019 Cycling World Championships.

Steep but great views on the way up. When going up, look around you in the bend for some great views over the valley, when descending, keep your eyes on the road ;-)

Coverdale Road

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Coverdale is beautiful & quiet. Either direction is thoroughly enjoyable. From Kettlewell you have the obvious challenge of Park Rash to overcome. From the East you have the prevailing wind in your face. It can be very, very strong. I swear there is a Venturi effect!

If you are nearing Middleham around midday, expect to see dozens of racehorses returning from the gallops. Please take care & be patient if necessary.
