Stoer Head Lighthouse

Highlight • Viewpoint

This glorious lighthouse was built in 1870 and sits in the stunning, remote landscape of the Stoer Peninsula. It's a fairly squat beacon, but stands on high cliffs and is still in use today. Thanks to the sheer drama of its setting, the lighthouse attracts thousands of visitors each year and its keepers' cottages now serve as holiday homes. From here, you can follow the coast north to reach the Old Man of Stoer sea stack.

Old Man of Stoer

Highlight • Natural Monument

200 feet (60 m) high and taking the full brunt of westerly weather in north west Scotland, the Old Man of Stoer is a truly incredible sea stack. Made from Torridonian sandstone, the stack stands across The Minch from the Isle of Lewis and is popular with rock climbers. It's also popular with a large variety of bird life including razorbills, northern fulmars, great skuas and guillemots.

Sìthean Mòr Summit

Highlight • Summit

In the north west of the Scottish Highlands, sitting above the cliffs on the Stoer Peninsula is Sìthean Mòr. This low hill – at 258 feet (161 m) – offers some absolutely extraordinary views for relatively little effort. Not far from the Old Man of Stoer sea stack, there's a reasonably good path to the summit and you're well rewarded.

Due west, the Isle of Lewis fills your views whilst looking north reveals the craggy coastline to Cape Wrath. The easterly views are where the true magic lies though, with views to the impressively lumpy forms of Assynt. From left to right, Quinag, Canisp, Suilven and Ben More Assynt create an unbelievable horizon.

Watch out for boggy sections and stick to the paths to keep your feet as dry as possible.

Great views to Assynt, and to the Outer Hebrides on a clear day. Good spot for bird and whale watching, with a great wee coffee shop in season.
