Clitheroe Castle

Highlight • Castle

Nestled in the Ribble Valley and sandwiched between the isolated upland of Pendle Hill and the broader fells of the Forest of Bowland, Clitheroe is a glorious base for many great adventures. The ancient market town warrants exploration too, with its Norman Castle and picturesque streets, thronged with independent boutiques and specialist stores selling fine wines, artisan coffee and famous sausages.

For many hikers, the main attraction is Pendle Hill. This popular summit is a long, sweeping plateau, infamous for the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. On a clear day it rewards with views across to Blackpool Tower and even the to Lakeland Fells.

To the north west, the Forest of Bowland is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its dramatic moors, drystone walls and quaint villages.
