Tideswell

Highlight • Settlement

Tideswell is a large village that has the honour of being ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. The pretty village has narrow streets, quirky cottages and an utterly timeless atmosphere. Tideswell has a good choice of places to stay, eat and drink, making it perfect for a pit-stop or an overnight stay. The village has a packed calendar of events throughout the year, too.

Lovely village. No obvious windmill

Bretton Ridge Road View

Highlight • Climb

This road along the ridge passes through the tiny village of Bretton (a few houses and a pub). You are rewarded with endless views of the surrounding countryside.

Leam Climb

Highlight • Trail

A climb so secret that even I didn't realise it was there for a long time! But a climb worth knowing about as the views back towards Fiddler's Elbow, Higger Tor and Millstone are really quite fabulous.

Quite steep at the start, there is a nice flatter section that rolls through the woods before joining up with Sir William Hill to take you up to the top.

Hot on the hilly heels of the 6km swooping descent from Abney and a sharp right takes you up the staggered climb of Leam Lane. A tiny but beautiful lane, if your lungs and legs let you have a look at the lovely house on one hairpin then the views over Hathersage and Hope Valley on the next ramp and through the woods it flattens off and even a descent before facing Sir William Hill next (right at the junction). Even stags in the autumnal views through the woods today.

Leadmill to Abney Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

There are a few different routes to make your way upto Abney but this for me is one of the best. It's hilly all the way up but plateauxs a few times before climbing up again, it's generally always very quiet and offers wonderful views over Hope Valley as you climb. There are a few trails leading off the road that are great if you are on a gravel bike or similar too.
