Historic village of Hampteau and the Ourthe River

Highlight • Settlement

Hampteau (in Walloon Hamtea, locally pronounced /hamtεː/, meaning "hamlet") is a town and sub-municipality of the Belgian municipality of Hotton. Hampteau is located in Wallonia, in the Belgian Ardennes, in the province of Luxembourg.

The village is located on both sides of the N86 between Hotton and La Roche-en-Ardenne and has several restaurants and terraces. In the summer there is a funfair in the village, which is mainly visited by the local population. Along the Rue du Moulin, the road from the N86 to Werpin, near the Ourthe lies the charming old part of the village. In addition to the old water mill, the "Moulin Faber", you will find old houses and farms built in the limestone and sandstone characteristic of the region.
In Hampteau, the Castle of Héblon and the parish church of Saint Michael are also interesting monuments. Hampteau used to be known for its orchards. The apples from Hampteau could be of a special quality due to the microclimate present.

Beautifully located climbing area on the Ourthe with its own picnic area and here the sound of the river instead of, as is often the case in Belgium, the road and railway line. Actually, there is something for everyone, although the focus is on easier to intermediate routes. The rock is good, but not always perfectly solid.

Ourthe Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful path from the residence to the silence next to the water. First forest then climbing rocks and then forest path over roots and stone. And the water on the right.

Faber Watermill

Highlight • Monument

This water mill for grinding grain still functions just for the pleasure of the visitors.

This Hotton watermill from 1729 gives us the true feeling of a bygone era. It was built along a watercourse, a second tributary of the Ourthe, which gave rise to an island (l'île d'Oneux) in the heart of the place.
At that time it was a communal mill and the inhabitants were obliged to grind their grain in the mill of the Lordship. This obligation was accompanied by a tax called "milling dues" and was proportional to the amount of milled grain. The mill was functional until the early 1960s and bears the name of its last owner, Mr Lucien Faber, whose wish was to open the mill to the public. She became the property of the Hotton Municipality in 1989.

A beautiful afternoon for a walk, sun in full force, not a cloud in sight. Departure at the bridge of Hotton past a few brave fishermen, right the Rue du Parc, further along Hotton War Cemetery and the Grottes de Hotton, along the meadows and forest descent to the Ourthe and crossing, Isabella bridge then back steeply up over rocky …
