In the period 1890-1910, post offices were built in almost all major Belgian cities, under the impetus of politician Jules Vandenpeereboom (1843-1917), who was Minister of Railways, Post and Telegraph from 1884 to 1899. Typical of the post offices from that period is the historicising design, in which integration into the specific historical context was always the priority. Well-known architects such as Pierre-Victor Jamaer (Liège, 1901), Louis dela Censerie (Bruges, circa 1890), Louis De Curte (Brussels, 1893) and Pierre Langerock (Kortrijk, 1906) were called upon for the designs.
The construction of the post office with a house for the receiver in Halle was entrusted to Maurice Van Ysendyck. The plans date from 1901 and were signed by Maurice Van Ysendyck (1868-1941), son of Jules-Jacques Van Ysendyck (1836-1901), the most important representative of historicism in the second half of the 19th century who had died shortly before. It is not known to what extent the design should be attributed to father or son. However, Maurice Van Ysendyck worked closely with his father and continued his practice after his death. He was involved in the restoration of the Church of Our Lady of the Sablon in Brussels, the Church of St. Peter in Anderlecht, the Church of St. Martin in Halle and the Church of St. Gertrude in Ternat. After the First World War, he reconstructed the town hall of Schaarbeek and the university halls in Leuven. The Halle post office is located on a rectangular corner plot, at the height of the choir of the Sint-Martinus church and right next to the Jesuit college. The original concept provided for a main volume along the street to which two single-storey cross wings (residential area for the post receiver and sanitary block) connected around an inner courtyard. This inner courtyard was closed off with a high brick wall. This rear section was repeatedly renovated over the years, while the main building was preserved in its almost original condition. It is a neo-Gothic-inspired corner building constructed of brick with the use of blue limestone and sand-lime brick. It consists of two floors and an attic floor under a slate roof, which combined a post office with a home for the receiver. The corner situation is accentuated by a one-bay wide façade bevel with a wimberg crowning, decorated with pinnacles and crockets. On the left and right, two symmetrical, three-bay wide stepped gables, crowned with extended top pieces, connect to it. The building has a large plinth of bluestone on which three coupled bluestone lancet windows with wrought iron thief bars rest. On the corner of the facade there is a bluestone bas-relief in an accolade-shaped niche with the coat of arms of Belgium and the inscription "L’union fait la force". On the far left, a modest bluestone basket-arch door with a barred fanlight gives access to the building. A drip moulding emphasises the separation between the office area on the ground floor and the rooms of the receiver on the first floor. White limestone and a more playful facade treatment are used here. The cross windows in a regular negative block frame are pulled together under a trefoil arch with slender colonettes, where the points of contact are enriched with grotesque human and animal figures.
