Warnsborn gravel section

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Just outside the city of Arnhem, but already immediately in the middle of farmers fields and forests, this beautiful gravel road is definitely worth the visit. From the gravel crossroads in the south you can go in pretty much any direction.

"We leave the busy N224 at the height of the Oud-Reemsterhei and cycle pretty straight ahead on the Planken Wambuisweg through this wide heath landscape; sometimes the path is lined with avenue trees, then again almost disappeared under the foliage.
“For centuries, the Planken Wambuis nature area was part of the estate belonging to Rosendael Castle. The long rows of beeches, hedgerows and moats in this area date from that time.”

A rest area at the intersection of Planken Wambuisweg and Mosselseweg tempts us to linger with a bench; Shortly before that I was torn: Driving and taking pictures at the same time on a sandy hard shoulder; the concrete track has to be kept to, otherwise you'll be sitting in the sand.
It starts to drizzle very lightly, the rain gear stays in the saddlebags. The wind continues to blow strongly.”

Climb Italian Way

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

One of the most beautiful climbs in the Netherlands with two hairpin bends. Tip! Don't drive yourself to death at the beginning, the climb weakens towards the end and this is the ideal point to make a final sprint.

Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

After the Normandy landings in June 1944, the Allied advance through Northern Europe was extremely rapid and on September 11, 1944, the Second Army invaded the Netherlands just south of Eindhoven, the first Allied forces to set foot in the country since the fall in May 1940.

Their next objective was to cross the Rhine before the Germans had time to reorganize after their recent setbacks, by securing the rivers and canals in their path at Grave, Nijmegen and Arnhem. 'Operation Market Garden' would involve the United States 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the 1st Commonwealth Airborne Division and the Polish Parachute Brigade.

On September 17, 1944, the 1st Airborne Division began landing west of Arnhem, but German resistance, bad weather and problems with supplies and reinforcements led to heavy losses and their objectives were not captured. They were forced to form a perimeter at Oosterbeek, which they stubbornly held until September 25, when it was decided to withdraw the remnants of the division across the Lower Rhine.

Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery contains the graves of most of those killed during the September landings, and many of those who died in later fighting in the area.

There are now 1,684 Commonwealth soldiers of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 243 of the graves are unidentified and two victims are commemorated by special memorials. There are also 79 Polish, three Dutch and four non-war graves (including three former Commission employees) in the cemetery.

On the edge of Mariëndael, the cycle path runs quite steeply through beautiful forest along the track. Be careful when driving down, you then turn left under the bridge over gravel and there are often pedestrians / oncoming traffic.
