View of the Alps from Kehrsatz and Belpberg

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The 🤩 dreamlike 🚴‍♂️ view of the Alps 🏔️ at the height of Kehrsatz at "8: Aare Route Stage 3" is sensationally beautiful.

At the same time you can see the Belpberg ⛰️ (892.5m) in the foreground, an isolated ridge in the Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The ridge has a width of 2 to 4 km and a length of around 11 km ☝️

Below the path it is nice to sit on the Aare. A kind of stone staircase offers a lot of space to sit and is not visible from the path above. If you don't know that you will find such a lush place there, you just walk by, because you don't expect it to go on behind the stone wall.

Monbijou Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Built in 1962 to span the Aare River, the bridge is named after the country house "Mon Bijou," French for "my jewel."

The bridge features spacious, separate cycle and pedestrian paths on both sides. The north side offers a view of the Federal Parliament Building, while the south side overlooks Bern's local mountain, the Gurten (848 meters).

Church of the Holy Spirit, Bern
The history: First a hospital, then a magnificent sacred building
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Bern has been mentioned since 1228. Built as a hospital church, it combined church, monastery and hospital until the 18th century. The Holy Spirit Hospital was run by the brothers of the lay order of the Holy Spirit, who cared for marginalized people there. These included, for example, the poor sick, the elderly, the disabled, pilgrims, beggars, orphans and unmarried pregnant women - anyone who needed a place to sleep, eat or be cared for.
The hospital church was built at its current location, which was far outside the city at the time. The area outside the city served as community property, where many citizens of the city of Bern had their gardens. At the same time, the hospital church was on the important road to Murten and Fribourg.
With the last expansion of the city around 1345, the hospital church was integrated into the city of Bern and was now located directly behind the city wall at the main gate, later known as the Christoffel Tower. The new district was called "Heiliggeist-Neuenstadt".
The first new building of the hospital church was built between 1482 and 1502. This spatially separated the hospital wing from the sacred space. The church also received a tower and a choir. In 1655, the sacred space was further enlarged and the hospital wing was now housed in a new building next to the church. Due to the dilapidated state of the hospital church, a new building was suggested in 1722. The hospital was moved to the current site of the Burgerspital and the church was rebuilt according to the Evangelical Reformed denomination. In 1729, the new baroque magnificent building was inaugurated, as it has been preserved to this day.

Good bypass of the main road - short, sharp climb in the forest and usually very little traffic.
